About SoCal Sea Turtles, Inc.

SoCal Sea Turtles, Inc. is an all volunteer 501(c)(3) federally-recognized non-profit organization dedicated to promoting small-scale fisheries while also protecting the West Coast's sea turtles and their coastal habitats from harm. We achieve these goals through in-person and online outreach and education, as well as consulting services.

SoCal Sea Turtles works with local businesses, non-profits, and government organizations to promote safer boating and fishing around sea turtles in their nearshore habitats. This work includes designing and distributing sea turtle awareness materials for brick-and-mortar businesses like marinas and bait & tackle shops, as well as a robust calendar of in-person and online events, including talks, a Traveling Sea Turtle Table, and social media channels.

SoCal Sea Turtles believes that prevention is the best medicine, and our programs and awareness materials are all designed with this principle in mind. Whether it is a 10-foot by 10-foot seawall sign, or a reflective decal for tackle boxes, everything SoCal Sea Turtles produces is meant to help people learn how to safely share our local waterways with sea turtles, without diminishing people's enjoyment of California's abundant and beautiful natural resources.

Who We Are: The People Behind SoCal Sea Turtles

Founder and Executive Director:
Sabrina Mashburn, MSEd., MAS

Sabrina has been a boater, animal lover, and reptile fanatic since birth, so working with sea turtles and the people who interact with them has been a natural fit right from the start. After encountering her first sea turtles at the NY Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Rescue Center as a volunteer in her home state of New York, and swimming with them as a certified diver in the Caribbean, Madagascar, and the Galapagos Islands, Sabrina decided to make sea turtles and ocean protection her lifelong career.

As the Founder and Executive Director of SoCal Sea Turtles, Sabrina's main areas of focus are communicating with the public through in-person and online talks, events, and social media posts, as well as designing and developing outreach and educational materials and programs for private yacht and angling clubs, SeaWorld San Diego, the US Navy, and the NOAA Protected Species Division, just to name a few!

Sabrina moved to San Diego to attend UCSD's Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 2015. As part of her master's research, she surveyed hundreds of boaters, anglers, and marine sports enthusiasts about their knowledge of and interactions with sea turtles in Southern California. The results showed that most recreational boaters and anglers did not know that there are sea turtles in Southern California year-round! Sabrina began giving in-person talks and presentations, and designing outreach and educational materials, shortly after her graduation in 2016, and she intends to continue this work for the rest of her life.

Sabrina was a Certified Biology Teacher in both New York and California. She holds a bachelor's degree from Skidmore College, as well as a masters' degree in Secondary Science Education (Biology, 7-12), and a master's in Marine Biodiversity & Conservation from UCSD.
